Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been placed under house arrest by the Supreme Court, as he faces trial for allegedly spearheading a coup attempt following his loss in the 2022 election.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court issued the order, citing Bolsonaro’s violation of previously imposed precautionary measures, specifically his posting of content on his son’s social media accounts.
Prosecutors allege that Bolsonaro led a criminal organization with the intent of overturning the election results, including purported plans to assassinate President Lula and a Supreme Court justice.
This order from Monday follows a previous directive from the high court last month, which mandated Bolsonaro to wear an electronic ankle monitor and subjected him to a curfew during the ongoing legal proceedings.
The latest ruling mandates ankle monitoring for Bolsonaro, restricts visits to family members and lawyers only, and orders the seizure of all mobile phones from his residence in Rio de Janeiro.
