Vanessa Whyte and her two children, James and Sara, who tragically died in a shooting in County Fermanagh, were laid to rest today.

A large crowd gathered at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Barefield, County Clare, Vanessa Whyte’s home county, to bid farewell to the loving mother and her children.

The man suspected of perpetrating the killings, Ian Rutledge, died in hospital on Monday evening.

Rutledge, 43, an agricultural contractor, was hospitalized in serious condition following the shooting and was considered the sole suspect in the deaths of Ms. Whyte and her children.

The Bishop of Ferns, Ger Nash, a close family friend of Vanessa, officiated at the funeral service.

Bishop Nash addressed the congregation, speaking of the “tragic and unspeakable loss” that the community has suffered.

“We begin by acknowledging that we are heartbroken at the tragic and unspeakable loss of three lives with so much to give to the world,” he stated.

“Every story and shared memory since their deaths reminds us of the irreplaceable part they played in the lives of their families, their community, their schools, workplaces, teams and clubs. All the conversations have reminded people of their own losses and how the loss for each person is unique and deeply painful. Such a tragic event causes us to ask how God could have a plan that is achieved through the sadness we see around us. We ask the question: “Why?”, and we know there is no easy answer.”

Vanessa, James, and Sara will be interred together at Templemaley Cemetery in County Clare.
