A 23-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with stabbing a Garda in Dublin city centre on Tuesday evening.
Abdullah Khan, whose address is in North Dublin, was arrested at the scene of the incident, which occurred at approximately 6pm on Capel Street on the city’s north side.
The Garda, a young probationary member of the force on high-visibility patrol with a colleague, was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
Khan was charged on Wednesday night following his detention for questioning. The charges include assault causing harm to the officer and production of a Tactix knife capable of causing serious injury.
He appeared before Judge Treasa Kelly at Dublin District Court on Thursday morning.
Khan has not yet entered a plea. He made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to Cloverhill District Court on August 6, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The charges fall under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.
Mr Khan, wearing a black T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms, remained silent during the brief court appearance.
Detective Sergeant Liam McLaughlin, of Bridewell Garda Station, testified that the accused “made no reply” to each charge. The court was informed that Mr Khan also received copies of the charges.
Detective Sergeant McLaughlin stated his intention to object to bail. However, defence solicitor Colleen Gildernew stated, “There is no application for bail today.”
Ms. Gildernew also indicated that her client wished to be physically present in court for his next hearing, rather than appearing via video link.
Judge Kelly acknowledged this request and directed medical attention for the accused while in prison, as requested by the solicitor.
Ms. Gildernew requested reporting restrictions on the publication of her client’s address, citing the nature of the case and “concerns around safety,” a matter confirmed by Detective Sergeant McLaughlin.
Judge Kelly granted the request, ordering journalists not to report the man’s address.
Legal aid was granted after a statement of Mr Khan’s means was presented to the court.
Judge Kelly also instructed the defence to provide gardaí with 24 hours’ notice should the accused intend to apply for bail.
