Gardaí have commenced a search operation today on open ground in Co. Wexford, as part of their investigation into the disappearance and murder of Fiona Sinnott in February 1998.

The search area will undergo a detailed examination, including excavation and technical and forensic analysis, over the coming days.

Road closures are in effect, with local diversions in place.

The Wexford/Wicklow Garda Division has maintained a sustained investigation for the past 27 years, conducting significant inquiries to determine Fiona’s whereabouts and investigate the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

A Senior Investigating Officer is leading the ongoing investigation.

Throughout the investigation, the team has amassed thousands of documents and reports, recorded over 500 statements, and secured numerous exhibits.

Extensive searches have been conducted, and six individuals have been arrested and detained in connection with the case.

Fiona was a mother to an infant daughter and resided in Ballyhitt, Broadway, Co. Wexford, at the time of her disappearance.

On Sunday, February 8th, 1998, Fiona socialized with friends at Butler’s Pub in Broadway, Co. Wexford. She departed the pub at approximately midnight, marking the last confirmed sighting of her.

A passing motorist reported seeing a man and a woman on the road near Kisha Cross, Broadway, around midnight that same night.

Additionally, two young men, believed to be in their late teens or early twenties, were observed nearby.

None of these four individuals have ever come forward. Gardaí are keen to speak with them or anyone else who was in the vicinity at the time but did not, or could not, come forward previously.

Investigating Gardaí are renewing their appeal to anyone with information related to Fiona’s disappearance and murder, who has not yet spoken with law enforcement, to please contact the investigation team.

Gardaí are also urging anyone who may have previously provided information but felt unable to share all they knew at the time to re-engage with the investigation team.

An Garda Síochána encourages anyone with any information, regardless of how minor or insignificant it may seem, to contact Wexford Garda Station at 053 9165200 or any Garda Station. Confidential information can be provided through the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
