St Columba’s College in Stranorlar, using their seismometer, registered the massive earthquake that struck off the east coast of Kamchatka.

Under the guidance of teacher Brendan O’Donoghue, students actively monitor and track global seismic events.

Following the earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale, tsunami warnings were issued for much of the North Pacific.

The earthquake, among the most powerful ever recorded, impacted Russia’s sparsely populated Far East, causing tsunamis up to 4 meters high across the Pacific and prompting evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.

The epicenter was located off Petropavlovsk, on Russia’s remote Kamchatka peninsula. It was the largest quake since the 9.1 magnitude event near Indonesia’s Sumatra island in 2004, which triggered an Indian Ocean tsunami resulting in approximately 220,000 deaths across 11 countries.

Russian authorities reported that a tsunami struck and flooded the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, inundating the port area and submerging the local fishing plant.

Officials stated that the town’s population, approximately 2,000 people, was evacuated.

State media reported that several people in Russia sustained injuries from the earthquake, although none were serious.
